The TUC recently warned young people as they embarked on
their careers not to become one of the 16-24 year olds seriously
injured at work every 40 minutes in the UK or killed at a rate of
one every month.
An expose published by Hazards magazine in August showed
that over 4,000 young people (16-24 years) are seriously injured
at work every year, 12 are killed (2004/5, 16 in 2003/4) and 15,000
are injured badly enough to be forced off work for more than three
days. Despite stricter health and safety rules for the youngest
workers, 16-24 year olds are at risk because their employers fail to
take account of their lack of workplace
experience and training, says the report.
Many of the new products in the bigger
and better Big Red Book have been
introduced specifically to provide
solutions for new legislative
requirements in the food and drink, oil
and gas, transport and distribution,
construction and manufacturing
industries.
New legislation includes the change to
the hearing regulations brought in by
the HSE in April; the change to oil spill
regulations which were introduced late
last year; and the increased
requirements to the slips, trips and falls
regulations. All these mean employers
now need to provide employees with
more personal protection equipment.
Mike Stanley, Divisional Director,
Products, from Arco said: “Complying
with health and safety legislation can be
a minefield as the rules, regulations and
the law seem to change month by
month. As an employer knowing what to
do - and when - can be a real problem;
but whatever your industry and no
matter how specialised we, at Arco can
help. Our experts will find the solution
for your health and safety
requirements.”
